Current Worship Practices
Updated by the Congregational Board, May 17, 2021
The congregational board made some significant changes to Shalom’s worship practices on Monday, May 17, 2021. The goal of these changes is to provide opportunities for us re-enter worship at levels that are comfortable for most of us. What follows is a worship experiment which will run May 23 to June 27. The congregational board welcomes your feedback as we enter this new phase of worship. We will continue to assess how our worship practices can best serve our congregation as we enter this transitional time, and discuss further changes at our June 21 meeting.
Addition of outdoor Sunday worship
Beginning Sunday, May 23, a somewhat shorter outdoor worship service will take place at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot. This service is an option for households who are not yet ready to rejoin 11 a.m. indoor gatherings, which are continuing. This outdoor service will also be broadcast via short-range radio, for those who prefer to remain in their cars. To streamline the live-streamed indoor worship, this outdoor service will be the only service with a children’s story. The RSVP system will no longer be used to indicate intentions to attend a worship service. Bring blankets or chairs. If weather appears to not be cooperating, cancelation will be shared by email and social media.
Both indoor and outdoor services will include masked congregational singing.
Masks still required
Masks will continue to be required indoors and will also be required at outdoor worship. The congregational board is well aware that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced last Thursday that fully vaccinated people do not need to wear masks in most situations. However, not everyone in the congregation has been fully vaccinated, especially the youngest among us. In the spirit of loving neighbors and welcoming worship participants — inside and outside — we will continue wearing masks.
We have heard from many diverse voices over the last few months. We understand some people would like Shalom to get back to “normal” more quickly than these changes allow. Other people will feel these steps are happening too quickly. We have sought to balance these needs safely in what can best be described as an early summer “experiment” as we all work to re-enter public spaces.
The Congregational Board appreciates your feedback and patience. Feedback can be emailed to the board at firstname.lastname@example.org.
